Michael T. Furlong, M.D. - Medical Director

Dr. Furlong founded Furlong Vision Correction to specialize in refractive surgery (most commonly LASIK and PRK/LASEK) and small incision cataract and refractive lens exchange surgery. Dr. Furlong has performed over 20,000 procedures and personally works with each patient to determine his or her best treatment option for vision correction.

Dr. Michael Furlong received his Bachelor of Science degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from the University of Hawaii School of Medicine, where he also completed his internship in Internal Medicine and Surgery. Following medical school, Dr. Furlong graduated from residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Utah Medical Center, one of the most competitive surgical training programs in the country. During this three-year residency, he performed over 400 intraocular surgeries as primary surgeon, four times the number required for an accredited program.

Dr. Furlong is an active leader in his field. He was the President of the Peninsula Eye Society from 2005-2006, VP in 2004-2005 and Secretary in 2003-2004. This society has 250 members of distinguished ophthalmologists from around the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dr. Furlong has received many awards for his outstanding performance in refractive surgery. These distinguished honors include: one of the Top 5 Surgeons out of 920 LVCI refractive surgeons nationwide; one of LVCI's Top 50 Practices in the US; voted Top Doctor every year since 2000 by his peers; Medical Director of the only LVCI Practice of Excellence on the West Coast; Official Laser Eye Surgeon of the San Jose Giants Baseball team.

A Message from Dr. Michael Furlong

I am a former LASIK patient myself and have enjoyed my new, found vision so much that I have dedicated my practice to bringing the miracle of laser vision correction to my patients. My greatest pleasure is listening to my patients describe the excitement of waking up the morning after LASIK and being able to clearly see without glasses or contact lenses for the first time in years.

It was during my residency that I developed my interest in laser vision correction and other methods of refractive surgery and decided to obtain specialized training in these emerging, state-of the art technologies. Although a fellowship is not required to practice refractive surgery, (fewer than 200 refractive surgeons in the United States have completed a full year of fellowship training), I believe there is no substitute for extensive formal training and experience in providing the highest quality care to my patients.

After investigating the best programs from around the world, I moved to Calgary, Alberta where I completed a one-year refractive fellowship at Canada's prestigious eye institute, the Gimbel Eye Center. During this fellowship, I worked with and was trained by Dr. Howard Gimbel, one of the world's authorities on refractive surgery and a pioneer in cataract surgery. I also co-authored several articles and book chapters on refractive surgery that have appeared in internationally acclaimed journals and textbooks. Following this specialized training year, I traveled internationally to train foreign ophthalmologists in the most current refractive surgery techniques. My extensive training and experience in the latest refractive surgery techniques has helped several thousand patients see better. From the initial consultation to the last post-operative examination, I am committed to spend the time that it takes to make you feel comfortable with the procedure and to answer all of your questions.

Dr. Patricia Shen, O.D. - Clinical Director

Dr. Patricia Shen graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1996, and then completed the Doctor of Optometry at State University of New York, College of Optometry. Dr. Shen has been in practice since 2000 and has specialized in the field of refractive surgery for the past several years. She is very excited to be an integral part of the Furlong team to provide the latest technology and best care to our patients. Dr. Shen hopes to offer her expertise and personal attention to make every patient's experience at Furlong Vision Correction a most memorable one.
