Mark A. Kontos, M.D. - Co-Medical Director

After receiving his medical degree from St. Louis University, Dr. Kontos served nine years in the U.S. Navy as a flight surgeon and ophthalmologist achieving the rank of Lt. Commander. During his service, he spent three years as a member of the elite Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN). Since leaving the service, Dr. Kontos has developed a busy refractive surgery practice supporting eastern Washington, Northern Idaho and Montana. Dr. Kontos is the only surgeon in the region to be honored by VISX, Inc. as one of the top 5% of LASIK surgeons nationwide. Dr. Kontos has performed thousands of LASIK procedures and has taught refractive surgery techniques to numerous surgeons both locally and throughout the country. Dr. Kontos is also a Co-Medical Director for TLC Laser Eye Centers in Billings, MT.

Christopher W. Sturbaum, M.D. - Co-Medical Director

After receiving his medical degree from University of North Carolina, Dr. Sturbaum completed an ophthalmology residency at University of Texas in Galveston. Following residency he went on to become a corneal specialist with fellowship training at University of Texas-Houston. His practice emphasizes advanced anterior segment care including expertise in LASIK, complex or difficult refractive surgical cases and corneal transplantation. Dr. Sturbaum has been a practicing ophthalmologist for the past ten years and has performed thousands of LASIK and microsurgical eye procedures. Dr. Sturbaum provides secondary and tertiary eye care and his corneal / refractive surgical experiences are a great benefit to the patients of the Inland Northwest.

Kimberly J. Calnan-Holt, O.D. - Clinical Director

After receiving her pre-medical degree from Montana State University and Doctor of Optometry degree from Pacific University, Dr. Kim Calnan-Holt obtained post-graduate residency training at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana. She then joined the Barnet Dulaney Eye Center in Phoenix, Arizona where she emphasized her practice in the areas of pre-and post-surgical evaluation. In 1994 Dr. Calnan-Holt had the opportunity to specialize in excimer laser vision correction during it's investigational stage and was instrumental in developing of one of the first and largest refractive surgery centers in the U.S. She has seen over 11,000 refractive surgery patients. Dr. Calnan-Holt recently moved to Spokane and combines her expertise with Empire Eye Physicians to benefit patients in the Northwest.
