Wendell P. Wong, M.D. Medical Director/Chief of LASIK Surgery
Dr. Wong is internationally renowned for his skill and dedication to his patients and the field of laser vision correction. He has patients travel from across the United States and around the world to realize their dreams of seeing with less dependency or entirely without their glasses or contact lenses. Dr. Wong has hosted doctors from many countries to help them learn his techniques and unique approach to patient care. He helped start one of the first refractive eye surgery centers in mainland China.
Dr. Wong has a strong educational background having attended University of Chicago for elementary and high school (graduating at 16), followed by Northwestern University for his B.A. and University of Illinois for his M.D. in 1977. He did his internship at the prestigious LA County General/ USC Estelle Doheny Eye Foundation and specialized in ophthalmology at the renowned University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. His professional eye surgery career began at Kaiser Permanente where he helped to start the intraocular lens implant program. He has been the chief of laser surgery at Natural Sight Laser Vision Center.
Dr. Wong has specialized in vision correction (refractive) surgery since 1983, having performed more than 35,000 refractive procedures, including over 20,000 LASIK procedures. Over 500 doctors have entrusted him with their vision correction.
Perhaps the ultimate statement of his total belief in laser vision correction is the fact that Dr. Wong has had the LASIK procedure done on himself on the same Visx Star S2 excimer laser he uses on all of his own patients. He has the distinction of being the most nearsighted eye surgeon in the United States to have LASIK. When interviewed on numerous radio and television programs, Dr. Wong states "I believe so much in laser vision correction, I wanted to set an example for my patients and colleagues."
Dr. Wong has been featured in many national publications, including Mademoiselle, Glamour, Popular Science, Readers Digest, Black Belt and Transpacific to name a few, and has served on editorial boards of two magazines. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the National Board of Medical Examiners and is an active member of many professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the International Society of Refractive Surgery.
He has been a recipient of the Star Surgeon Award for three years in a row, given to the 50 most experienced laser eye surgeons in the United States 9 (out of 16,000 opthalmologists). Dr. Wong believes offering the most personalized service, along with the finest technology and skill will achieve the best visual results.

Michael B. Brenner, MD, FICS, board certified ophthalmologist and native to southern California, takes pride in his ability to provide visual enhancement, preservation and restoration for his patientsnot to mention all of his family and friends! After graduating from UCLA School of Medicine and upon completing residencies in internal medicine and ophthalmology, Dr. Brenner was honored to have been accepted as the Abe Meyer visiting assistant professor at the Jules Stein Eye Institute in Los Angeles. There he completed an intensive fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery. Since then, he has engaged in many research and clinical activities to advance the field of vision corrective surgery.
For more than a decade, Dr. Brenner has advanced technologies in all aspects of Laser Vision Correction throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties. He is also Clinical Adjunct Professor at the Southern California College of Optometry and is currently involved with hands-on student training in the field of refractive surgery management. In addition, he maintains a thriving referral based practice specializing in Anterior Segment Surgery in Long Beach that boasts a 40-year presence in the area. With the aid of his skilled staff, Dr. Brenner enjoys successfully comanaging cataract and refractive lens surgery patients with academic and community-based optometric practices.
He has performed in excess of 15,000 LASIK and other refractive eye procedures over the last 15 years most of which occurring within the comanagement arena. With the increasing scope of practice within the field of Optometry, many southland doctors have completed preceptorships with Dr. Brenner greatly benefiting from his knowledge and unique patient management skills. This will afford them the opportunity of bringing new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities into their own practices.
Dr. Brenner is a Fellow of both the International College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition he is a regular contributing author and speaker of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) as well as the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS). He currently serves as an FDA clinical investigator for new intraocular lens designs and maintains his position at the forefront of new refractive surgical procedures including:
- NearVision CK (Conductive Keratoplasty) to correct hyperopia and presbyopia
- Surgical correction of presbyopia with the FDA-approved accomodating crystalens and the ReSTOR Lens.
- Implantable collamer lens (ICL) to correct high myopia and astigmatism
- The use of Intacs for Kerataconus and Corneal Ectasias
Wherever you find him operating, he characteristically provides the highest level of patient care and comfort while maintaining an enriching teaching environment. Optometrists and their staff are always welcome to join Dr. Brenner at one of the centers for any level of interactive educational experiences surrounding surgical eye care. Those who know Dr. Brenner and manage patients with him appreciate his attention to detail and meticulous nature, but also benefit from having total access to him in order to obtain answers to a very broad scope of all eye care related issues.

Susan Shin, O.D. - Clinical Director

Susan J. Shin O.D. is the Clinical Director at the TLC Laser Eye Centers in Torrance. Dr. Shin graduated from the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry (UCBSO) in 1998. While at UCBSO, she completed her residency at Veteran's Hospital in San Francisco and Sacramento, and the Omni surgical center in Baltimore, MD. Through her residency, Dr. Shin was able to work closely with cornea, glaucoma, retinal and uveitis specialists. While on rotation, Dr. Shin became interested in refractive surgery when she observed a LASIK procedure and the joy of a patient achieving 20/20 vision.
Prior to attending UCBSO, Dr. Shin graduated with honors from University of California at Berkeley with a degree in Molecular Cell Biology and Vision Science. While attending optometry school, she also received research grants from the National Eye Institute to study the development of binocularity and depth perception in the pediatric population. Dr. Shin has presented at the American Academy of Optometry with her findings.
Dr. Shin is also an active member of American Optometric Association, California Optometric Association, and South Bay Optometric Association. She resides in Playa Vista where she enjoys spending time at the beach, mastering her culinary creations and dining with friends.
