Conductive KeratoplastySM

Conductive KeratoplastySM (CK) uses the controlled release of radiofrequency (RF) energy, instead of a laser, to reshape the cornea.

CK is performed using a small probe, thinner than a strand of human hair, that releases radiofrequency (RF) energy.

The probe is applied in a circular pattern on the outer cornea to shrink small areas of corneal tissue. This circular shrinkage pattern creates a constrictive band (like the tightening of a belt), increasing the overall curvature of the cornea.

The procedure, which takes less than three minutes, is done in-office with only topical anesthesia (eye drops). CK is the first alternative to laser for hyperopia.

Tired of reading glasses? - New radio wave technology provides an alternative

There are 60 million Americans with farsightedness. Farsightedness is most predominant among Baby Boomers, many of whom view reading glasses as a sign of aging. Symptoms of farsightedness include:

  • the early need for reading glasses after age 40 and current bifocal use
  • difficulty reading menus, computer screens, the alarm clock, or driving at night
  • eye fatigue when reading in poor lighting or at the end of the day
  • trouble changing focus from distance to near
  • constantly repositioning reading material in an attempt to find the right focus

Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) is the first non-laser procedure for farsightedness. CK uses the controlled release of radiofrequency (RF) energy, instead of a laser or scalpel to reshape the cornea.

Because CK is performed without the cutting or removal of tissue, it meets the needs of the risk-adverse patient who's been waiting for an alternative to Lasik for farsightedness.

For years, the farsighted patient has been left behind as vision correction procedures progressed: RK, PRK, and even LASIK initially were all treatments solely for the nearsighted. CK is one of the first procedures designed specifically for farsightedness.

TLC Laser Vision Center in Torrance receives the first VISX Star 4 in South Bay!

TLC Laser Eye Centers and their Chief of LASIK Surgery, Dr. Wendell P. Wong are pleased to have been selected to receive the first VISX Star S4 system in the South Bay. Other laser centers here in the South Bay and LA still have the older S2 system or S3. The question is raised "Is the S4 twice as good as the S2?"

In a word "no", but there are several important distinctions that Dr. Wong points out making the S4 his favorite amongst the five excimer laser systems he has access to at TLC, including the Autonomous Ladarvision system. First and foremost is the VISX Active Trak which uses a sophisticated tracking system that helps to accurately guide the laser beam even with eye movement. This means every pulse will be on target, hence giving even better visual results. VSS or variable spot scanning blends the best of excimer technologies to create smooth treatment zones in the shortest amount of time. The S4 employs an automatic centering module that assures central alignment with your visual axis. It also ties in with their Waveprint and Wavescan programs to allow customization of your treatment. More than one patient has exclaimed "I have Super-vision!"

All of these features of the VISX S4, along with the skill and experience (over 15,000 LASIK cases) of Dr. Wong and his dedicated TLC staff contribute to the extremely high level of satisfaction of his patients as evidenced by the numerous thank you letters and photos he has received. "The greatest compliment I can receive is the personal referral of family, friends and co-workers from my LASIK alumni patients, as well as referrals from optometric and ophthalmic colleagues who have entrusted us with the care of their long term patients whom we co-manage."

Find out if you're a good candidate for LASIK. Dr. Wong and TLC Torrance are offering a complimentary consultation. The phone number is 310 784 2020 or schedule your consultation online.

Selecting the Right LASIK Surgeon Clearly Makes a Difference

By Donna Leeds (Article taken from PV Style Magazine - October 2002

Since 1995, LASIK surgery has given millions of people around the world miraculous sight. Today, more people than ever are choosing LASIK over contact lenses and glasses. But, moreover they are choosing the surgeon first and the procedure second. We had the opportunity of speaking with Dr. Wendell P. Wong, Medical Director and Chief of LASIK Surgery at TLC Laser Eye Centers, Torrance to find out what criteria were important in selecting your LASIK surgeon. He is recognized as a preeminent eye surgeon, having performed the first LASIK procedure in the South Bay, with a draw of patients coming from across the United States and around the world. In addition to his experience of 14,000 LASIK cases, including over 500 fellow doctors, and members of his own family. Dr. Wong believes so much in LASIK he had the procedure himself over 6 years ago.

If you or someone you know is thinking about having LASIK surgery, please consider the following guidelines to choosing a surgeon who is right for you:

  1. Referrals Check out referrals from those who have had laser vision correction. Ask the surgeon for names of former patients who can describe their experience first hand.
  2. Experience Choose a doctor who has done at least 5,000 LASIK surgeries. Choose a doctor who is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
  3. Equipment There is a laser for almost every healthy eye. Be wary of the doctor that has access to just one laser for all eyes. Make sure the laser is FDA approved
  4. Commitment LASIK surgery should not feel like you're driving through a fast food restaurant. Make sure your doctor encourages follow up care. Ask about future enhancements and cost.
  5. Comfort Are you comfortable with your doctor and the staff? Were all your questions answered? Are you comfortable with the actual steps of the procedure?
  6. Cost The initial consultation should be free to determine if you are a candidate. Some insurance companies cover laser vision correction. If your employer has a flexible benefits plan, you can usually include laser vision correction it. Many surgeons have payment plans that cover the cost with flexible terms. Beware of special discounts or moonlight specials. RUN, not walk away from a low price that seems too good to be true. Your eyesight is priceless.
  7. Laser Surgery center Ask for a tour if one has not been offered. Ask where you'll be before surgery. Is it a relaxed environment? Do you get to meet the surgical staff, and have any of them had LASIK? Check out the facility for cleanliness. Does the doctor perform the procedure in a sterile environment?

The right questions will lead you to the right surgeon. Remember, you only have one pair of eyes and finding the right surgeon for you is critical in receiving the best care possible to give you the best visual results.

Dr. Wong and his staff at TLC Laser Eye Centers, Torrance give complimentary consultations to see if you would be a good candidate please contact us at 310 784 2020.

Same Technology Approved by NASA is Available at TLC Laser Eye Centers

The National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) has announced the approval of Bladeless Custom LASIK vision correction for their astronauts - the same bladeless custom technology that is also available nationwide at TLC Laser Eye Centers.

NASA's approval came following a review of extensive military clinical data using the same two lasers employed in our Bladeless Custom LASIK. The research showed that the use of the combination of technologies provided superior safety and vision - results TLC Centers agree are unparalleled.
