Pittsburgh LASIK Reviews

I had PRK at TLC Pittsburgh in March of 2011.

I have had an eyeglass prescription since elementary school years, but never depended on glasses/contacts until my 20s, when I started working in EMS. It was then, trying to read road signs and house numbers in the dark, that I realized how bad my eyesight really was. I made do with glasses and contacts for many years, but for my job, neither was very practical. Working in cold weather, my glasses would steam up as soon as I went into a warm building from the cold outside air, interfering with my ability to see my patients clearly for several minutes. Contacts were a little better, except when you're working 24 hour shifts or overnights. I kind of cringe when I think of the long stretches of days at a time that I used to leave my contacts in, without giving my eyes a break; it wasn't uncommon to leave them in for 3-5 days at a time! Even a painful eye infection didn't really slow down my contact lens over-use. As I got a little older, I noticed that contacts that used to be really comfortable started to irritate my eyes. I changed brands a couple times, resorted to wearing my glasses more often, and noticed even my lightweight glasses were giving me a headache due to pressure points. I remembered that through Davis Eye Insurance I was eligible for a discount through TLC and decided I was finally in a position financially get laser vision correction.

After extensive pre-surgical evaluation the surgeon was much more comfortable with PRK rather than Lasik. As I sat up on the table after my 5 minute procedure, I was relieved to notice that I could read the clock across the room, something I hadn't done for years without glasses or contacts. Since I had PRK, my vision did get worse again before it got better. The first 3 days I stayed home and slept a lot. No pain, but I couldn't see well enough to do much of anything, which was what I was told to expect. I would say my vision completely stabilized after about 3 months at 20/20. The progress was slow and steady, I was probably 20/30 from about month 1-2 out from the procedure.

The only thing I would change about the whole thing is I would have done it sooner! I had no idea how affordable, or how easy the payment terms would be to handle. Also, I think it's important for those of us who have had PRK to tell our stories, since that procedure isn't as commonly done.
