Learn about laser eye surgery options for myopia treatment

Chances are you know someone who has myopia, also called nearsightedness. Approximately one in four people in North America is nearsighted. Myopia means that you can see close things more clearly than items in the distance. For example, when watching TV, you might be able to see the buttons on the remote control but the screen would be blurry.

What Causes Myopia?

Nearsightedness occurs because of the shape of your eyeball in relation to the curve of the cornea (the transparent front part of the eye). If you have myopia, light coming into the eye produces a blurred image for items that are farther away.

Interesting to note:  The eye continues to grow through childhood. That is why myopia often begins to present in school-age children. If a child (or anyone) is straining to see things in the distance, squinting, eye strain, or headache are common indications.

Options for Correcting Nearsightedness

Myopia is a common vision problem. Glasses or contacts may be used to correct it, but these options are not always the perfect choice for everyone. Luckily, there are also laser eye surgery options for myopia treatment. In all of the following, a beam of light is used to gently reshape eye tissue to adjust how the eye focuses light.

Custom Bladeless LASIK — For nearsightedness, LASIK surgeons can use Wavefront technology to perform complex measurements and a detailed analysis to help a surgeon evaluate unique requirements for myopia treatment.

Contoura® Vision/Topography – Guided LASIK — Myopia can be treated using the latest FDA-approved LASIK eye surgery technology available in the U.S. Contoura Vision enables a surgeon to perform a highly personalized procedure to correct nearsightedness.

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) Laser Eye Surgery — Myopia can also be treated with PRK, which is a slightly different laser eye surgery procedure than LASIK. It may be an option for patients who do not qualify for LASIK.
