Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay for Presbyopia

The Raindrop Near Vision Inlay can help you reduce, or may even eliminate, the need to rely on reading glasses for your intermediate or near vision.  The Raindrop Inlay is a small and transparent disc that is made of a material similar to a soft lens. It is extremely thin and is approximately 80% water in its composition. It can be easily inserted into the cornea of your non-dominant eye in a simple LASIK-like procedure. Once inserted, Raindrop can gently change the shape of the cornea in a way that will improve your ability to focus up close without impacting the way both eyes work together to see distance.

Similar to the beginning of a LASIK procedure, Raindrop uses a laser to create a flap just beneath the surface of the eye, into which the inlay is inserted. The FDA-approved outpatient procedure is usually completed in 10 minutes, and most patients are able to return to normal activities the next day.

Am I a Candidate for Raindrop?

Presbyopia refers to one’s reduced ability to focus up close over time; most people begin to experience presbyopia around age 40 and start to need reading glasses for their intermediate or near vision. Every person develops presbyopia at some point in their lives. However, with the help of Raindrop, vision over 40 doesn’t always have to include reading glasses.

The ideal candidate for Raindrop Near Vision Inlay is:

  • A person between age 41 to 65
  • Tired of struggling with readers for their near vision loss
  • Has mild to none prescriptive needs for distance vision
  • In overall good health
  • Free from eye disease and/or eye infections

Schedule a free consultation today to see if Raindrop is a solution for your near vision loss.

What to Expect on Surgery Day

Before your procedure, you will be given anesthetic eye drops. Like LASIK eye surgery, Raindrop uses a laser to create a flap just beneath the surface of the eye.

Most patients experience little to no pain throughout the procedure, which generally lasts about 10 minutes. Following the procedure, patients can return home, and should arrange for a driver.

What is recovery like for Raindrop Near Vision Inlay?

Raindrop is an outpatient procedure. That means patients can return home on the same day, but should arrange for a ride home, and relax for the rest of the day. The following day, most people can resume routine daily activities.

Most Raindrop patients notice an improvement in their near vision within a week, and it is at a closer range than they are accustomed to. Their near vision will continue to improve throughout the next several weeks to months where improvement in near vision will occur at a more comfortable distance. During the same time period, some patients may also notices a loss of sharpness in distance vision just after the procedure, which also improves over first few month. In addition, a clinical study involving Raindrop utilizations in eligible patient reported the below results after 24 months of monitoring1

  • 98% of patients can read a newspaper (20/40 near vision or better)
  • 88% of patients can read fine print (20/25 near vision or better)
  • 76% of patients can read an email onscreen (20/25 intermediate vision or better)

Your doctor will prescribe eye drops to increase comfort and speed up healing. These should be used for several months as per instructed by your doctor. Post-operative care includes a handful of follow-up appointments to ensure the healing process is going smoothly.

It’s important to note that the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay is a medical procedure and does carry some risks. Though rare, complications can include vision and eye symptoms, dry eyes, problems with the cornea, eye infection, decreased vision, decreased contrast sensitivity, increased eye pressure, or the need for another eye surgery, such as the removal of the Raindrop inlay.
