Dr. Kersten has been a busy surgeon with Harvard Eye Associates since 1988. She is devoted to excellent patient care and has a loyal following of patients throughout Orange County and southern California. Since joining Harvard Eye Associates, she has performed many thousands of LASIK procedures and cataract surgeries, as well as numerous advanced refractive techniques to treat myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

She trained in ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard University, finishing in 1986. She was the 12th woman to complete this prestigious training program. Her internship was at UC San Francisco, Mt Zion Hospital. A native of Iowa, she graduated from the University of Iowa, Summa Cum Laude in 3 years, and was named a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1978. She matriculated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1982.

For two years following her training, Dr. Kersten worked with nonprofit groups combatting blindness in developing countries. For one year, she was with Project Orbis, the flying eye hospital, teaching and bringing modern eye surgery to many countries in Africa and Eastern Europe. She has also worked with the SEVA Foundation, Liga International, Cristoffel Blinden Mission and the Flying Doctors of Kenya. She has worked in over 20 countries, including Nepal, Kenya, St. Lucia, Nigeria, Mali, Sudan, Tunisia, Bosnia, Malta, Albania, Bulgaria, Georgia, Russia, Myanmar, Laos and Mexico. Recently, she provided free cataract surgery in Honduras and in Vietnam with Surgical Eye Expeditions.

Dr. Kersten believes in providing the best possible care to her patients through close personal attention. She is known for her thorough approach and meticulous attention to detail. She was an associate clinical professor at the UC Irvine Department of Ophthalmology, from 1992 until 2002. During this time, she and her partners were given the award of Teacher of the Year by the UCI residents. Dr. Kersten is board certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and she is a fellow of the American College of Surgery. She has lectured in many countries throughout the world and has published articles in ophthalmology journals.

Her professional affiliations include memberships in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association, the California Medical Association, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Orange County Medical Association, and the Orange County Society of Ophthalmology.
